Tillandsia usneoides — Spanish Moss

Bring a little botanical drama indoors with Tillandsia usneoides, better known as Spanish Moss. This wonderfully unusual air plant grows in long, silvery-green trailing strands, creating a soft, slightly wild cascade of foliage.

Unlike conventional houseplants, Spanish Moss doesn’t need soil. It absorbs moisture and nutrients through its leaves, making it perfect for hanging from shelves, branches, hooks or other plants. Its sculptural, almost ethereal appearance is particularly lovely displayed en masse.

Our plants are approximately 40–50cm long. As a natural living product, each plant will vary slightly in shape, fullness and colour.

Care

Spanish Moss likes bright, indirect light with plenty of good air circulation. Avoid strong, direct midday sun and keep away from radiators or very dry heat.

Mist thoroughly 2–3 times a week, or soak in room-temperature water for around 15–20 minutes once a week. Spanish Moss particularly appreciates distilled or rainwater, as it can be sensitive to the minerals and chemicals found in some tap water.

After watering, gently shake away any excess and hang somewhere with good airflow so the plant can dry completely. It enjoys a little extra humidity, making it particularly happy in bright bathrooms and kitchens, but shouldn't remain wet for prolonged periods.

Please note: Tillandsia usneoides is a living plant and natural variations in shape, fullness and colour are all part of its character.
